Who We Are

Welcome to Midwatch Industries LLC.

Thanks for visiting this part of the page; if you are like me, the story of an organization is an important part of making a decision to work with someone.

We are a small 3D Design and Printing business based out of Colfax, WI. (We are co-located with my wife’s business Greta’s Play & Stay)

First of all, you might be wondering why anyone would want to name a business “Midwatch”. Well, Midwatch is a nautical term for a watch conducted from midnight until 4:00 AM. Not the best watch for a sleep schedule, but for me, the midwatch on the bridge of a destroyer was a significant learning experience. During the midwatch the ship is usually quieting steaming towards some PIM (plan of intended movement) or turning circles in a box. Most of the crew is asleep except for those standing watch on the bridge, in CIC (combat information center) or engineering. The Captain and Executive Officer are also asleep…hopefully anyway; leaving those on watch to handle the safe navigation of the ship.

The quiet nature of the midwatch allows watchstanders a profound mix of respite, freedom, opportunity, and sacred responsibility. Training and experimentation are common-place, as you actually have the time to play around and learn through experimentation. At the same time, everyone onboard is trusting you to maintain a sharp watch as the ocean is an unforgiving environment to operate in. During the long hours, I would often step out on the bridgewings and look up into the infinite stars that you can only see in the darkness of midnight on the ocean. There is nothing like staring into the endless universe to humble your soul. Yet at times, some of the strangest and sometimes dumbest conversations happen during these dark hours when idle minds find obscure discussion topics to pass the time.

So, like the midwatch on a ship, Midwatch Industries is a project that encompasses all the concepts I learned during those long hours. The freedom to explore in the creation of useful products, to learn new methods of manufacturing, to quickly adapt to new challenges, to enjoy the divine and the ridiculous in the process. I don’t have a PIM yet, just a rough heading to navigate towards.

We are looking forward to working with you!
